PRECISION CRAFT MODELS #587 READING T1 4-8-4 IN SERVICE #2113, ALSO LEASED BY PRR DCC W/LocSound, HO BRAND NEW IN BOX ~ NEVER USED OR DISPLAYED TAKEN OUT OF BOX FOR PICTURES ONLY STORED FOR YEARS Reading T-1 engines were a state of art examples of super steam power designed and built in anticipation of heavy troop train service during World War II. A total of 30 T-1’s were built from the boilers of I10sa, 2-8-0 at Reading shops and they were numbered #2100 – #2129. This gigantic powerful iron horse was too big to fit into Reading terminal with 70” drivers and had a top speed of 65 mph. Tender held 26 tons of coal and 19,000 gallons of water equipped with Franklin boosters for extra traction for starting the train or climbing up steep grades. On June 1, 1956, approximately 10 years into their services, the then power-short Pennsylvania railroad leased 9 T-1’s from the Reading. Engines #2107, #2111-2115, #2119, and #2128 were assigned by the Pennsy to non-cab signal territory on the Susquehanna Division between Enola Yard, outside Harrisburg, and Williamsport, Renovo, and Wilkes-Barre. The Pennsy used the nine Reading engines until December, when they were returned to the Reading much the worse for wear. Their adventure on the Standard Railway of the World (Pennsylvania Railroad) had cost them dearly: poor coal and virtually no maintenance put them at the top of the list for scrapping in 1957. Most of the group was scrapped in 1957 (only after 10 years of service) with the 2128 holding out until May 1960. Pennsy used them as they were without painting them in Pennsy scheme. For Pennsy faithfuls, this Northern is a must have.
